Perrelet Debuts Limited Edition Turbine DRAGON Double Rotor Timepiece to US Market
by Artaud CHARLES
Is it possible to acquire a fine Swiss-made timepiece with the physical attributes and mechanical sophistication coveted by collectors for about 6,000 U.S. dollars? For that amount, you could get only one-third of an entry-level Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine, which starts at $17,500. Fine Swiss horology can be described as the marriage of art, design, passion, craftsmanship and technology. That is why Swiss-made watches have been, for centuries, in high demand by the rich and famous from all over the world. Haute Horlogerie is a painstakingly tedious and onerous process and that is why fine watches are expensive.
A mere thirty-six days after the conclusion of Madison Avenue’s Watch Week, the Perrelet Limited Edition Turbine DRAGON Double Rotor Timepiece was launched on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at an intimate reception given at the posh Soho Grand. In attendance were members of the press; prominent figures of the watch industry; Mr. Michael Goldstein, President of Perrelet North America; Mr. Lau, Owner of Magnolia Jewelers and Mr. Wu, Managing Director of Magnolia Jewelers. It is fitting to mention the presence of Master technician Malcolm Garjarian of Perrelet, who took time to not only explain but demystify the workings of the Turbine Dragon.
While the Limited Edition Turbine DRAGON Double Rotor Timepiece was the star of the day, the entire gamut of Perrelet watches – for men and women – was showcased as well. The diligent and supremely knowledgeable staff of Magnolia Jewelers was on hand to answer questions. Although I am a big fan of the Perrelet Tourbillon automatic, the Turbine DRAGON took my breath away because of its elegant and sexy lines as well as its price tag of under $6,000. My face was transfixed with astonishment when Mr. Goldstein told me the price. I concurred with a few other journalists that this timepiece was going to be scooped up by watch aficionados as well as collectors.
The Limited Edition Turbine DRAGON Double Rotor Timepiece – a celebration of the year of the dragon – symbol of the Chinese emperors. It appears in all its splendor when the turbine is set into action. Carved out from hand-colored Polynesian mother-of-pearl, it is encrusted into a naturally white mother-of-pearl dial. This shimmering creature, accredited with the magical power to spawn happiness and harmony, is exquisitely highlighted at the heart of a black-clad Turbine watch. The Dragon special series comes in a DLC-treated 44 mm-diameter case fitted with an alligator leather strap, and is issued in a limited numbered 99-piece edition
Had it not been for the prodigious talent of Abraham-Louis Perrelet, a Swiss born in the Neuchatel Mountains in 1729, the Turbine Dragon would never have seen the day. This watchmaking genius is credited with the invention of the automatic self-winding movement: a feat he conjured up in 1777.
A prominent figure in the world the Haute Horlogerie once said that a fine Swiss-made timepiece’s primary purpose is not to tell the time but to fascinate the senses. Well, I can say that the Perrelet Turbine Dragon – because of its price point, elegance and sheer technological sophistication - should have no problem fascinating the senses of many old and new clients.
